My service engine light came on took it to dealer he said it was torque converter or tranny. I didn't notice anything weird or different about the drive however I drove my other car as much as possible. Then I washed it one day which this could be a total coincidence but my wheels were black and after washing it put it back in garage, drove it about 30 miles and noticed a huge puddle under my car when i pulled out of friends driveway. We checked all the fluids and nothing matched what was in the driveway. I got home same puddle in garage. still drove it now and then sometimes there was a small puddle sometimes there was nothing. I haven't driven it for about a week but I got in accident in other car so I went to drive the X5 and pulled out of driveway and noticed a very distinct noice that didn't sound good so I turned around and put it back in garage. The real kicker is I finally found an indy out here in SLC, I have been looking for weeks and I have an appointment tomorrow, however, the noise is so bad I know i wouldn't make it and I'm afraid I would do more damage to the X. So like I stated we checked all the fluids we could think of and they were all full. Transmission, oil, brake, anti-freeze. Am I missing a fluid or is it possible that one of those is leaking but it's showing that they are full? also what's leaking doesn't match any fluids checked. Any ideas? I'm afraid the noise is from whatever is leaking is empty now. Please help I also got on the ground with car on to see if I could see where noise was coming from. It's louder when I'm on the ground vs looking at engine standing up. It's not a total ticking noice but close.
A couple of things:
1)Did you check the power steering tank? If you start the engine(idle not moving) and hear groan like sound this could be it. The pump is down below so that could be it (starnge cause you'll get low P/S fluid sign on the dashboard?).

2) Transmission fluid, doubt it unless you hit a rock underneath and have a leak on the way to your friend house. warning light will go off as well

I'd tow the car to indy shop, cause driving it may lead to more damage.
Let us know.
