I noticed my 2008 3.0si started off slow when I first got it, but the transmission seems to have gotten used to my driving because now it seems fine (I am 17,000 miles now).

Sport mode indeed changes the driving characteristics. In sport mode, the vehicle accelerates much quicker and shifts much faster.
