You will have no problem in the snow with the X5, at all. I don't know what the snow is like there, but even in the heaviest Chicago snows I am fine with all season tires.
With dedicated snow tires, I doubt you will need chains. The BMW X-Drive is much more advanced and intelligent than the Jeep 4WD.
How does your wife make it through in a little 1-Series?
