Not sure when the 'modern era' started, but from my own experience, favourites would include:
  • Original Mini, for starting the whole fwd 2-box-design era
  • Early E-types, despite the reliability issues, simply for the design and performance
  • 65-66 Mustang, for inventing pony cars
  • Suburban (for being the best at the concept, and longevity)
  • 86 Taurus (for reinventing four door sedans)
  • E46 BMW, truest to the mission in recent years
Just balancing out the BMW focus here. Lots of other memorable cars, but not that I have experience with. I do think that the current E60 is an amazing vehicle, a very competent car, and the 3.0 tt is an amazing engine, but I don't think the E60, as good as it is, will stand the test of time the same as those above. I suppose I am interpreting 'best' as iconic.
