Yes the factory enclosure is sturdy. I actually tried first to build my own box but was not happy with the sound. It was better than with the factory subs but not what I was expecting. I then had the idea of reusing the stock enclosure.
I spent some time to study the exact place where to put the 10" sub before cutting the big 10" hole in the stock enclosure as there is not much room for error. As you can see in the picture below the 10'' sub fits pretty well and neatly in the stock enclosure. I filled up the few openings around the sub with insulation foam to seal the enclosure. The sound is great, much much better than with the 2x 6" subs.
