1] Yes, Lave AC on all the time, air con means it conditions the air which can either be make it warmer or colder. I also live in the UK.
2] Set air cir to AUTO press the left hand side of the recirculate button. This means if you get behind a smelly bus then the particle sensor will auto switch on the re circulation until the offending smell has gone.
3] People recommend to set it to either ONE red dot or ONE cold dot. I have mine set to one red dot and point the vents upwards.
