They can't buy Wachovia. It would put give them more than 10% of deposits in most of the east coast, which they are not allowed to do by law. That is why someone like Wells Fargo makes more sense. Wachovia is not big in the west, and Well, is not very big in the east. It'd be a good match. Matter of fact, rumors of merger talks between these two has been going on for a few months, now... even before the financial crisis arose.
