BMW use 2 different monitoring systems in the X5. The first one uses the ABS sensors to measure changes in the diameter of the wheel/tyre setup. The second method uses direct pressure sensors.

Depending on which country the car is sold in will determine which sensor setup you will have. I believe USA has the direct sensor mechanism whilst countries like Uk and Australia have the indirect method.
