We've got thousands of laptops at work, and rotate them every 2-3 years. While we have tried Dell, we have abandoned them due to very high problem incidences.
We continue to use Thinkpads, and have noticed no decrease in reliability when the brand moved from IBM to Lenovo.
As I noted above, if you want to go cheaper than a Thinkpad, look at one of the Lenovo house brand models.
