Did you install the stand alone VR module? On the 2005's it is not a standard item and must either be installed by you or your dealer (it's an easy DIY)

Assuming the VR module is installed, you need to hold in the button with an icon of a speaking face on the steering wheel for a few seconds to activate the VR functions.
