The reason it failed was because Dr. King was assassinated. He, along with his supporters, had planned the "Poor People March" on Washington, which was supposed to take place in late 1968. They estimated it would be the largest march they had ever had, and expected a turnout of over 1 million people. The purpose of the march was to protest against the capitalist system which denied many of them jobs and equal pay for equal work. It was surely a pro-socialist agenda. But King was killed a month or two before the march, and it basically fell apart at that point.

That is what Obama is referring to -- a movement lead by Dr. King. If you are going to criticize the ideas, why not criticize the leadership of the movement rather than someone who is referring to its failure 33 years later.
