As mentioned above, the MkIV is very very fussy about the disks it will read, and even a disk that appears to work will occasionally crash the nav system.
Some additional tips:
a. Use Verbatim DVD-R's (that are made in Singapore)
b. Shut down as many processes as possible on your PC (assuming PC)
c. Don't use other programs while burning (see point b)
d. Burn at slow speed -- not necessary 1x but no faster than 2.4x
