There is no "separation of church and state" in the US Constitution. Period. The First Amendment says "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, ..." That means no official state religion, which is contrary to what had always been the case elsewhere (including England). This was to keep gov out of religion, not religion out of gov.
