Defective wheel? Come on now, aluminum wheels crack. Fact of life. Steel wheels bend. If you like shiny lower unsprung weight aluminum wheels, then it's part of the game. If you find this unacceptable, switch to some steelies - you will be hard pressed to crack them.
If you bank an aluminum wheel into a curb or some other solid object, there is a chance you will crack the wheel. I cracked two OEM corvette wheels curbing them when I was not used to the lack of sidewall and width of 275/35R18s on my firebird. Ooops.
