The difference between the BMW oil separator/ crankcase vent valve/ cyclone valve, whatever you want to call it... and a regular PCV valve is that a regular pcv valve simple vents positive crankcase pressure into the intake system. The BMW one condenses the oil from the crankcase vapors and drains it back into the oil pan, sending the cleaner air to the intake system. Thus reducing oil consumption.
