The E53 X5 does NOT have fiber optic audio... and the warning lights have nothing to do with the audio system. It still sounds to me like whatever tech got the ticket just does not know how to diagnose this problem properly. Some techs just aren't good with electrical gremlins like this.

I'd talk to the shop foreman and suggest him to either help the tech with the car or give the repair ticket to a tech thats better with electrical problems. And maybe a PuMA case (BMW email based technical support, engineers on the other end) would be in order.
