I was worried of the same thing. We recently purchased our 06' X5 and I did have some rattling in the rear that was driving me insane. I lifted the sliding deck and found all the spare tire components just thrown around the spare tire and not placed back and locked in their designated places. After I did that, I hear no rattles. It's actually pretty secure. Ours if fairly tight in place and requires a little strength to pull it out and push in back in. If you don't feel you need it, I'm sure you can easily find many without it. I look at it as the ultimate tailgating option
We go to many Met and Yankee games (my fiancee is a yankee fan
