I can't speak to your particular area, but I can say that AT&T Wireless service in Detroit is rock solid - much better than any other provider, including Verizon.

As for having an iPhone work in the Verizon network, you'll have to wait at least 3 and a half more years at the earliest, since Apple signed a 5 year exclusive with AT&T in the US when the iPhone was launched in July of 2007. That and the fact that the iPhone is a GSM based handset (worldwide) and Verizon uses CDMA in its network means that you'll need to find another phone to meet your needs if you are with Verizon.
