While it does take about 15 minutes for the vehicle to fully go to sleep on its own, it doesn't take that long when you do a reset. Just long enough for the internal capacitors to lose their charge in the various modules. Removing the battery terminal for 10-15 seconds it called an "executive battery reset" in BMW terms... a full, better be damn sure of it reset is having it off for at least 10 minutes, and toughing the ground terminal to the positive post or vice versa to definitively discharge the system.
