I have to respectfully disagree with this reviewer. I owned an X5 35d for a week now and have no complaints about the acceleration or smoothness. There is no lag at all. I'm coming out of an Audi A3 3.2 and the X5d is smoother than that very capable car. I get 30 mpg highway and 24 mpg overall.
