Whether you are paying for some child living in poverty to attend school, or be protected from a fire is no different in concept than paying for that child to see a doctor when sick or be given food to eat. All of those things are welfare of some sort. Most would actually say the second two items are of more importance than the first two.

No socialist, wrong. If my house is on fire..I get help..if I need a cop..I get help....my kids will go to public school...these I benefit from....paying some family on welfare...or paying for your employees health care..doesn't help me. While noble and kind, I donate enough money throughout the year to benefit masses that are unfortunate, etc..I don't need your..I mean the government forcing me into it. USA..largest donating country in the world..not for long though. Got it? 
And "most" comment...not really pretty sure a person whose house is on fire or is getting shot at thinks the cop/fd are more important.
