I have 2003 X5 3.0 and have all kind of problems from the begining. I just bought my extend($2,550) and maintance($1,195) BMW warranty last week with $50 deductible.

I put 20k miles on my cars every year, 6 years 100k miles warranty just right to me. The brake replacement will cost me more than $1200 from dealer OR $400 parts from DIY every 35k~45k miles on my E39. So, $1200 is a good deal for maintance warranty. Don't miss it...
