Regardless of recommendations I think the best way to choose is to try some out. Proshops and golf shops will have all kinds of clubs you can test, some at the driving range too or you can rent. Have someone knowledgable pick some and try them out. Picking up a second hand set of really good clubs that are right for you is also a way to go - once you play for a year on those you can be more comfortable making a high dollar new set choice.
Lots of factors to consider -
The flexibility of the shaft is the bend or the flex. If you're a powerful swinger, you'll have more control with less bend. Beginners and less powerful swingers are better off with more flexibility. A lot of people say that high-handicap golfers use the 3-wood for the tee off and add in the 7 and 9-woods.
When I started back up golfing, I would use the 3 iron off the tee - it was much more predictable - better to get 150-175 yds straight off the tee than to slice or shank off to the side and do a mulligan every tee. Once I got the driver to be more predictable I went to a big one - very forgiving.
Lots of people are useing a hybrid, it has a lower center of gravity and produces higher shots while a short shaft will improve control and accuracy.
Enjoy the most fustrating game on the planet and good luck.
