Quite possible but there are Linux parsers for AVI and it has MPEG-4 support. AVI is not a
complicated format to parse and, AFAIK, there are no licensing fees required to use it.
BTW,
here is a good summary of the container formats and which video and audio formats they can contain.
Too bad the changer doesn't support playing back the .AVI videos
