If it has an old type (Mk2 or Mk3) Nav, then it's pretty much just plug and play. Buy a Mk4 DVD based nav and plug in the Blue & White multiplugs and the coax for the GPS antenna.
As for playing movies, yes, but you'd need either the BMW OEM TV/video module and the wiring harness adapter or one of the 3rd party AV 'injectors' ... preferable to go with the OEM TV module which has an AV-in option and is selectable using the monitor controls.
