Minnesota law requires formal notification for the Lemon Law. They recommend you contact the manufacturer and service manager. Obviously each state is different.
I called BMW to let them know what was going on and to make sure that dialog was open between them and my dealer. I just explained my expectations to them (in a very calm manner).
A documentation trail is key along with a good relationship with your dealer.
