I don't have an X6, but I was wondering...

Does the gear shift have to be to the left in Sport/Manual mode before you can use the paddleshifts to shift up or down? What happens when the gearshift is in the normal driving position and you try to use the paddleshifts?? Will it actually shift gears or just ignore the command?
