I think you've answered your own question. The dealer says the hitch won't stand the weight. For me, that would be the end of the matter. As one who has towed alot, I can tell you that a wide safety margin is desireable when towing. While the X5 may be able to tow 6,000 lbs, when it is pulling at it's limit there isn't much of a safety margin given it's own weight and wheelbase. I personally think you are trying to use the wrong vehicle to pull our boat. The dealer agrees.
