I'm in the same boat as you and also want to eventually upgrade my h/lights by removing or exchanging headlight lens and amber corners and throwing in angel eyes. Have you searched ebay and if so maybe post what options you find on here.
I'm sure you'll be able to open the headlight casing with that build date.

Strange how Dave from custom angel eyes hasn't responded to you.

Good move with getting a BMW tech to install although a bit pricey I would think.
