Did the exact thing on my e39. My e39 came with stock angel eyes, i upgraded the angel eye bulbs with MyCarr LED 7000k Bulbs, they were much brighter at night, however during the daytime they are more washed out then the oem yellow bulbs. Now to run the stock angel eyes as drl, i had to do some re-wiring, dunno about you guys but i noticed if i disconnect the angel eyes cable that it did not set off a bulb out warning, so it was perfect for what i was planning to do. I got a set of a LED Angel Eye Remote Wiring Harness, got my set from asptuning.com, paid i think $20CAD, much cheaper then other vendors, and i wired up the angel eyes as if i was wiring up aftermarket LED angel eyes. I tapped into the dome light for the remote trigger (fade on and off), used the positive terminal in the engine bay for power, and found a source in the fuse panel for secondary remote trigger which is used so the angel eyes stays on during daytime. I then removed my high beams so no more drl, and it didn't set off a light warning either. Planning to go in and get my drl's actually turned off one of these days.
