oh just to clarify I didn't mean that my review of the speakers may not be accurate, just that a comparison to his X5 wouldn't be

This would maintain the OEM amplifier as well as the built in crossovers. Usually most of our Stage 1 customers (even those with aftermarket head units) still use the factory amplifier to push the speakers, although it's certainly possible that your friend went through the trouble to upgrade the amplifier & crossovers as well.
