What year is your X5? Do you have the round 20 pin connector under the hood or just the OBDII 16 pin connector under the dash.
If it is just the 16 pin connector then you reset it through the button on the left of the cluster. (described in an article on the homepage I believe)

It's 97 540i with round connector and 2003 x5 with obd2
