Sorry to see you're up for alternator repairs. Mine went on me about 4 weeks after I bought the X. After market warranty covered the whole repair which was done by my indy and ran out at about AU$850.

There is a very good write up for DIY with good pics: X5 3.0 Alternator and belts DIY (with pictures!) or if that's not an option ring around some other local indy's and get quotes.

I remember you live in Sydney, hopefully someone will chime in with info on a reputable indy as there are heaps of them there. If that dosen't happen google BMW car clubs in Sydney, grab the Yellow Pages, try and use the dealer as the last resort with those sort of prices.
