I had the IPOD integration kit in my M3, and while it was nice not to pick up the IPOD, I ended up leaving it on shuffle for my whole library, as searching songs was a pain.

For my X5, I have a Iphone with a rubber surface case and put it on top of the cup holder cover. I have the aux port in the cigarette tray and a power link from the rear 12V power run through the armrest. I'll take a picture of it, but it's great to have the Iphone coordinated with bluetooth as well. It fades out the music and pauses it, will connect you via phone, and when you are done, it will fade back in the music.
