Welcome...the IL 6 vs the V8 is a debate you won't get "solved" here in a few posts. Both engines are excellent.
The newer V8s do about as well in mpg as the IL 6, if driven carefully. The gap really narrows in the E70.

"Problems" in the IL6 vs V8 are hard to define with any real data analysis, imo. The auto trans on the V8s seems
to present more anecdotal problems, imo, but strictly from memory.

We have an '01 IL6, but with a 5 spd manual; we don't tow and I have never felt it was underpowered in any
situation we've encountered in 7 1/2 years. However, the V8 is a go getter.

If you tow, think V8...if no tow, the IL6 is a fineazz; the choice is yours. No used car pricing maven, but that
price is a tad high, imo.
Keep looking: there are lots full of them. Get a CPO covered car, if you can.
