I actually had the little tube come out and I was able to twist it back in without taking anything off. No leaks. Water pump and stuff that normaly is associated with it was my 1st DIY on my X and with a help of some great threads here, it went easy.
.....anyway,

The aluminum pipe (#6) or "hose" as you're describing is held in the cooling system accumulator near the firewall by just an oring (#7). So if you have the pipe off, check the ring, may be a good idea to replace it. Also apply some coolant on the ring to make it easier to push it back in. ...and I know, it will be rough to work with only an inch or so to grab onto.
