i think all X5's had this feature... get the net that will keep him in the back. it attaches to the roof area. up front there are controls like the wiper arm/ blinker arm that i wouldnt want a dog near.

if you cant find the BMW net then i'm sure you can rig one up.

other than that, i think you can reach the connector from inside the center console by removing the tray that holds CDs. possibly disconnect it?
