I said I had it in my REAR window and it did not look tacky because there was an authentic german plate affixed to the back. The license plate was in the rear window but it was very much concealed by the rear window tint. So it was barely noticeable (which was why I was pulled over) and did not look like it was falling apart at all. In fact, if you look at the picture in my avatar, a plate was in the rear window then.
