I heard Solzhenitsyn said that when they announced that Stalin had died, people in the gulags cried for him, even though he put them there. They did not think he was personally responsible, or he somehow didn't know about them personally being there, and that if he did, he would have fixed it.
That kind of rationalization gets people willingly oppressed.
I'm considering reading The Gulag Archipelago for the psychological/ leadership insight.
