The bracket is required, I found. I also suggest getting some rubber sheeting with a stickum side and using that wherever the box might contact something. Lastly, I added some at the bottom face of the box so it would press the box back.
I found this material at OSH, in the shelf lining dept.
All this has kept it solidly in and rattle-free. Before, the box would work itself out and the speaker would contact the compartment lid.
