You make plenty sense, but I think you're missing something. You're thinking with your mind...and I agree. If I didn't fight the guy (another thing I always try to avoid...any physical confrontation), I certainly would have first tried to find a definite way to get away, and two, called the cops. There are just no winners in this situation unless we let the cops handle it their way...even if "I" were to fight the guy and win that battle.
However, what I think you're missing is that not everything thinks like you, or I. Before I do anything, I think about the potential future consequences. Many folks simply think of making it through the situation, become irrational, and panic. While it clearly is not the best course of action to take, and may even seem stupid to us all, it does not mean the person had any negative intentions whatsoever. We all react differently to certain situations; especially those where we feel threatened.
