BlackX5 is on a distinguished road
Update:

I too have a broken door handle and had disconnected the battery while replacing the valve cover gaskets. I tried this battery to the starter thing and it worked eventually but here is what I did. This may make it a bit easier.

First after trying to get under there, I removed the passenger side front tire while the X5 was jacked up from the front. With the tire removed I was able to see the cover for the starter. The starter isn't easy to find if you don't know what you are looking for. I eventually found it after looking underneath with a flashlight. Anyway, the starter cover is in plain site from the wheel well area at the side of the X5. There is a single bolt on the outside of the cover and two at the back of the starter which point to the front bumper. If you remove the side bolt and bend back the cover plate you will have better access at the starter terminals.

I connected the jumper cable several different times and changed locations each time. Finally I reconnected it to the terminal that is most accessible (it's the terminal with the larger of the two black cables) and eventually I was able to pop the trunk. I think your odds of unlocking the trunk may be better than unlocking the doors in that the trunk unlock only needs one click.

I meant to take pictures but was so frustrated by the process that I put it back together and came back inside.

Hope this helps!
