The excessive wear is caused by the negative camber setting fo the X5 rear wheels. BMW set it up that way to cause inherent understeer to make the vehicle less prone to rolling over.

I have taken the negative camber out and have it at basically zero. I have had no ill effects on my handling and my tires wear evenly with no road noise.
