BMW now gets better or similar performance (depending on model) out of a tt 6-cylinder than typical American V8's (save a few). Most American V8 cars are not really good track performers either as the handling suffers and they are typically pigs. Even the old e46 M3 can compete with or even beat many typical new American cars with V8's. As heavy as we complain about BMW's getting, most American cars with V8's are much heavier and do not handle nearly as well.
Mustangs are fairly good cars. I happen to like them, but an e46 M3 would be a better track car.
It also depends on what car you are talking about and what sort of comparison. A 135i is very similar to a Mustang GT as far as 0-60 is concerned. It would probably beat it actually.
OP, I agre with others, that would be comparing apple to oranges. I doubt that comparo has been done.
