I see what you're saying, but design costs money as well as the materials, and both are directly related to MSRP.
Don't you think that if the materials and design of a Pontiac G8 @ $30k = the design and materials of a BMW @$50k that GM would not be declaring bankruptcy? They'ld be selling cars like crazy, and their ad campaign would be "we're better than BMW for $20k less".
