My current setup with 255/50-19 on OEM 19x9 fronts only have less than half an inch clearance between the tire sidewall and the strut. If you really want to do 285s all around, then you need to go with a different offset than OEM for the fronts.

Actually, there should be no problem going with 285/45-19s on 9" wheels up front. (As a couple guys on the forum who are currently running 285/45-19's on 9" wheels all around would attest).
In fact, Toyo Proxes S/T's (which are a pretty standard size compared to other popular 285/45-19s) are designed to fit on wheels between 9" and 10.5". And if you take the specs they quote (based on a 9.5" 'measuring rim') the overall section width will be 11.0" when mounted on a 9" wheel. By comparison, the same tire in a 255/50-19 size mounted on the same 9" wheel would have a section width of 10.8". And a 275/40-20 mounted on a 9.5" wheel (the OEM front tire size on the 4.6/4.8) has a section width of 10.9"
The section width of the tire really does depend on the wheel width, as the same 285/45-19 that is 11.0" wide on a 9" wheel will measure 11.4" wide on a 10" wheel.
