I have the same problem in my ECE E46 Touring 4/2001
, so according to KiwiJochen it looks like I have the old version of NG radio .
Because of ULF-Bluetooth retrofit I retrofitted the NG radio with OG-wire-harness-to-NG-radio adapter (which I added the AUX IN home made adapter in) as well and the NG BM54 radio I used is

ETK shows - 3rd generation of radio, produced from 9/2002 to 12/2002
I rebuilt and replaced AUX IN adapter twice thinking I soldered the adapter poorly.
So, maybe the radio does not support this input? Roy, Jochen?
Is it possible somehow (e.g. radio FW update ???) to enable this input for my radio version or should I replace the whole (pretty expensive) unit for a newer one? Anyone?
