I have 2002 X5 4.4i, same short 2-3 sec rough engine sound then normal. Only do it after short drive and not everytime. car has < 60K miles.
Need to track it down, If I give up I'll take it to dealer.
My wild guess is either belt tensioner or vanos solenoid going bad.
