Here's the problem. Currently, iPhones are GSM phones whether sold in U.S. via AT&T or rest of the world. However, Verizon is currently using CDMA which will be a defunct technology in the future. It seems both Verizon and AT&T is probably going to choose LTE as their 4G technology which is more related to GSM...Sprint has chose WiMAX for their 4G technology.
So probably Verizon and Apple will have to coordinate the release of a 4G LTE iPhone....unless Apple makes a special CDMA version.
Anyhow, one thing is for sure, Palm Pre GSM version is coming out later this fall and Verizon will release Palm Pre by January 2010 (since Palm already has made a CDMA Pre which is on Sprint now). I believe AT&T will release the Palm Eos (candybar webOS phone) by this fall as well. I'm sure AT&T will release the Palm Pre by January 2010 as well. Looking at Palm's history, they have released their phones on multiple carriers in the U.S. My Centro has been available for Sprint, AT&T, and Verizon and also available as unlocked GSM phone.
