My chain jumped teeth on the cams due to a improperly installed guide after the previous owners shop removed the heads and reinstalled the guides w/o torqueing them down. Honestly, you're really better off calling a shop like www.bavengine.com or www.metricmechanic.com as both have been rebuilding all types of BMW engines for years. From what I've found over the years, the M62TU is the same motor across the board, regardless of where it's installed...so if you've got both engine out and side by side, just make sure that your to-be-installed 740 engine has the necessary X5 bits on it. Im not sure how long you plan on keeping the car, but I assume for a while since you're replacing the motor. Do the waterpump, valve cover and valley pan gaskets, and the oil seperator valve since they're going to be super easy to do at the moment. If you're looking for an affordable 10-15+ horsepower mod, hit the junkyard again and grab a pre-vanos intake manifold from any 3.5-4.4 530, 540, 740, 840 V8 up to 1998. It has larger internal passage, so it flows more air, then get the matching $$Dinan$$ software to optimize it.
